| In the VIII Century B.C. greek colonists arrived from Eubea, founded Ischia and named it Pithecusa.The Romans called it Aenaria (syn. Terrifing). The name Ischia (from the latin insula) is first evidenced in a letter from Leone III to Carlo magno in 813 A.D.
